Group Therapy for Children and Teens
“Group Therapy is like a fitness center for social skills. Teens emerge from a positive group experience with new interpersonal tools and abilities. They speak up in class, resist negative peer pressure, and stand-up for themselves. Group work also helps teens increase their capacity for self-expression and emotional assertiveness. ” Sean Grover L.C.S.W.
Group therapy provides a safe and supportive environment where individuals can connect with others who share similar experiences. Led by a licensed therapist, group sessions encourage open discussion, skill-building, and emotional support among peers. Unlike individual therapy, group therapy allows participants to learn not only from their therapist but also from the experiences and perspectives of others.
Groups are typically structured around a specific age range or therapeutic goal, ensuring that participants are in a space that best meets their needs. Our practice currently offers group therapy for children (ages 5-10) and teens (ages 13-17). Sessions focus on helping participants develop emotional awareness, social skills, and coping strategies in a guided and encouraging setting. Through activities, discussions, and interactive exercises, participants practice communication, emotional regulation, and problem-solving in real-time.
LEGO® Therapy: Learning Through Play
LEGO® therapy is a structured, play-based approach designed to help children develop social and communication skills in a fun and engaging way. Originally developed to support children with autism, LEGO therapy has proven to be beneficial for children who struggle with teamwork, problem-solving, and emotional expression.
In a LEGO® therapy session, children work together to complete a structured building task, taking on specific roles such as “Builder,” “Supplier,” and “Engineer.” This cooperative approach encourages teamwork, patience, and turn-taking while improving verbal and nonverbal communication skills.
Peer-Role Play Therapy: Building Social and Emotional Skills Through Dungeons & Dragons
For teens and young adults, peer-role play therapy is a unique and effective way to build social, emotional, and problem-solving skills in a dynamic group setting. Using the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), participants engage in collaborative storytelling, decision-making, and character development in a guided therapeutic environment.
CO-ED TEEN PROCESSING GROUP
Our Co-Ed Teen Processing Group is a supportive and structured therapy group designed for teenagers of all genders to explore their emotions, experiences, and challenges in a safe, facilitated environment. Led by a licensed therapist, the group provides a space for teens to share their thoughts, develop coping skills, improve communication, and build peer support. Topics may include stress, relationships, self-esteem, anxiety, family dynamics, and personal growth. Through guided discussions, activities, and mutual support, participants gain insight, resilience, and a sense of connection with others facing similar struggles.
